Shared Histories Festival: The Indian Experience

You may have heard of “Shared Histories: The Indian Experience”. The festival starts in Johannesburg on the 1st September and continues all the way till the 5th of October. The highlights of the festival are:-

1) A week of Goan Cuisine at Le Canard Restaurant, 163, Rivonia Road from 1st to 8th September.

2) ‘Bollywood Love Story’ a vibrant, high energy musical with a cast of 35 from India. The musical has recently toured Germany and won rave reviews. Performances at Market Theatre from 4th to 14th September at 3.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m.

3) Three Exhibitions on Visual Arts (Satyagraha), Textiles (Indigo Story) and Febrics and Photographs (The Inner Voices) from 5th September to 5th October at Civic Art Centre, Sandton from 11.00 a.m to 5.00 p.m.

4) Performances of Indian Ocean, the highly popular World Music Group at:-

i) Blues Room in Willage Walk, Sandton on 5th and 6th September at 9.00 p.m.

ii) Zoo Lake on 7th September from 1.00 to 2.00 p.m.

iii) The Arena of University of Johanneburg, Soweto Campus on 9th September at 6.00 p.m. (free entry)

5) A retrospective of some of the most poplar films of actor/director Amir Khan at Nu Metro Cinemas, Monte Casino from 12th to 21st September.

6) A week of Indian literature featuring eminent writers including Nayantara Sahgal, Pavan Varma, William Dalrymple, Vikas Swarup, Kunal Basu and Urvashi Bhutalia at  Wits University from 15th to 18th September.

7) Performances by Aditi Mangaldas, one of India’s finest classical dancers at Dance Factory on 16th -17th September at 7.30 p.m.

8) Performances by Dr. L. Subramaniam, India’s greatest violin maestro at Bass Line on 26th and 27th September at 9.00 p.m.

9) Solo concert of pure classical music by Dr. L. Subramaniam on 28th September at 5.00 p.m. at Linder Auditorium.

10) Performance of Gayatri by the Janak Khendry Group at Theatre on the Square, Nelson Mandela Square on 5th October (Details: TBC)
